Risks of Being an Older Mom

The Risks of Having a Child Over the Age of 35

Societal trends increasingly show women are waiting to conceive well into their thirties. You may be one of these women who wanted to establish a career and "enjoy life" before getting pregnant for the first time. Or, perhaps you want a baby with your second partner. With today's medical advancements and understanding of pregnancy, the chances of having a successful pregnancy and healthy baby have increased. However, there are still risks involved:

  • A study conducted by the University of California, Davis, concluded that older moms are at a higher risk of having a child with autism.
  • The chances of having multiples increases, which cause further late-pregnancy risks.
  • Older women have an increased chance of developing gestational diabetes. Women with gestational diabetes tend to have larger babies, which can lead to labor and delivery complications.
  • Women over 35 are at a higher risk for having a baby with chromosomal abnormalities, such as Down syndrome.
  • The need for a C-section is greater. Older women's bodies are not as well-suited for delivering a baby.
  • The risk of prolonged labor is higher. Older mothers have a higher risk of a long labor, putting the baby in distress.

You Should Be Made Aware of These Risks

Doctors and nurses have a professional responsibility to warn of pregnancy risks, as well as take measures to prevent birth injuries and birth defects in high-risk pregnancies. Failure to do so may be cause for a medical malpractice lawsuit. If you are an older mom whose child suffered a birth injury or birth defect, it can be helpful to discuss your options with an experienced and knowledgeable lawyer.
